Verstappen overtakes Leclerc to win F1 sprint race and take pole at Imola

Max Verstappen won the opening dash of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix meeting in dramatic fashion as he passed Charles Leclerc on the penultimate lap. “We are obviously not fighting for the championship,” Hamilton said. Verstappen won the 21-lap race and in so doing will start from the front of the grid after brilliantly taking the lead on the penultimate lap, beating Ferrari’s Leclerc into second with Sergio Pérez third for Red Bull. With Mercedes out of the picture, the battle at the front remains between Leclerc and Verstappen. Having claimed eight points for the win, Verstappen has clawed back a single point to Leclerc who leads the Dutchman by 45 points. Leclerc made an electric start, jumping Verstappen who was on pole into turn one.
