LOVES PARK, Ill. — Seventy-five years ago in 1948, a new race track appeared on the local scene with the opening of the Rockford Speedway. In the early 50s, Rockford’s stock car races were part of Andy Granatelli’s Hurricane stock car circuit. The 1990s saw Knaus win four more Rockford late model crowns, giving him seven. Bobby Wilberg won his first title in 1991 and would win his last Rockford title in 2000, giving him a seven championships. Over the years, the National Short Track Championships has been the premier race of the season at Rockford, usually a season-ending affair for late model stock cars. We want to entertain the guy that comes to Rockford Speedway twice a year.
