Checo and Lance began Formula 1’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend with encouraging pace across the two free practice sessions. Checo would end the session in P6 with a best time of 1.38.831, while Lance was fractionally behind in P7 after lapping in 1.38.956. All teams were required to begin the session with 10 laps on Pirelli’s 2021 tyre compounds, which Checo and Lance quickly completed at the start of running. Checo would take P7 at the end of the 90-minute session, courtesy of a 1.37.506 lap time. Lance ran on all three tyre compounds in the session – including a three-lap run on the Soft tyre – and lapped in 1.37.560 for P10. “But it is what it is, and so our focus today has been on the long runs.
