Movember has a strong affinity with the world of motorsport, and the MotormMouth team are big advocates for mental health. Therefore, Motormouth decided it was a perfect opportunity to team up and raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

The event will once again feature celebrity and pro-racing drivers, show cars and a silent auction of exclusive F1 items with the goal of raising vital funds and awareness for both Movember and The Brain Tumour Charity.

MotorMouth CEO, Tim Silvey said: “Our first event took us all by surprise, it was far bigger than any of us expected but it seemed to resonate with a lot of people. We ended up raising a good chunk of money for The Brain Tumour Charity and some much needed awareness, thanks in no small part to all the celebrity drivers who gave up their time to join us and share the event through their channels. This time we welcome on board Movember as our second charity partner and look forward to going even bigger and better for #MMRace22”

Oswin Croft, Fundraising Manager at Movember, said: “Movember is proud to collaborate with Motormouth and The Brain Tumour Charity to raise awareness of key health issues. Movember tackles male specific cancers and mental health issues, meaning all three organisations are working towards a common goal; to improve the lives of those affected by these devastating conditions, and those around them. We’re excited to be a part of the event, and we’re sure we can have a deep and lasting impact working together.”

Movember and Motormouth will combine forces to raise funds and awareness in 3 key areas; men’s mental health, prostate cancer & testicular cancer. Three out of 4 suicides globally are by men. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, while testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men.

Mental health is also a key concern for The Brain Tumour Charity and their community. Statistics from their 2018 report ‘Losing Myself’ demonstrate the profound effect of a brain tumour diagnosis: 91% of study participants in the study said that their tumour had affected their emotional or mental health.

Nearly 3 in 10 people reported experiencing personality changes such as depression, chronic feelings of anger, heightened emotions and disinhibition. 2 in 3 respondents felt a negative impact on their friendship and the same proportion saw a negative impact on relationships with their partner. These effects arise from physical changes to the brain caused by the tumour and often do not improve with emotional adjustment to the condition.

Annie Edwards, Corporate Development Manager at The Brain Tumour Charity, said: “We are especially proud and grateful to have MotorMouth’s support to help fund our world-class research and carry on all our work to accelerate a cure for this devastating disease.

“MotorMouth’s first Celebrity Charity Kart Race raised almost £10,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity and connected members of our community from across the country, from celebrity racers with a personal story to corporate partners to community ambassadors”.

“We are unashamedly ambitious in our goals to double the survival and halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life, and the partnership with MotorMouth and the support of Movember, will be invaluable in helping us to achieve these by reaching a wider audience and raising vital awareness.”

The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity, committed to fighting brain tumours on all fronts.

The organisation funds pioneering research to increase survival and improve treatment options, as well as raising awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours to bring about earlier diagnosis.

The Charity also provides support for everyone affected so that they can live as full a life as possible, with the best quality of life.

The partnership with The Brain Tumour Charity is inspired by MotorMouth’s Harry Benjamin, whose mum Ginny, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour. Ginny was diagnosed in 2017 after experiencing severe headaches which Harry’s dad, Jon, being a practicing neurosurgeon, suspected might be something more than just a bad headache. Surgery followed with chemotherapy for the majority of the year before more surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, she eventually passed away at home in November 2018.

Harry said: “Our last event was emotional and exciting in equal measure, and I’m so pleased we’re back to do it all again. My thanks to everyone involved and helping to fight for two amazing charities. #MMRace22 is set to be our biggest event yet.”

About The Brain Tumour Charity

Registered Charity in England and Wales (1150054) and Scotland (SC045081)

We are the Brain Tumour Charity and we understand that when you, or a loved one, is diagnosed with a brain tumour, a cure really can’t wait. Every day 32 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour, yet changes in survival rates have barely improved in 40 years compared with other cancers, investment in research is low and diagnosis is still taking much too long. That’s why we’re working faster and going further to beat brain tumours sooner. A cure can’t wait.

Brain tumours – the facts

  • Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40
  • Over 12,000 people are diagnosed each year with a primary brain tumour, including 500 children and young people – that’s 33 people every day
  • Over 5,300 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year
  • Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by on average 27 years – the highest of any cancer
  • Just 12% of adults survive for five years after diagnosis
  • Brain tumours are the largest cause of preventable or treatable blindness in children. Childhood brain tumour survivors are 10 times more likely to suffer long term disability than well children.  This accounts for 20,000 additional disabled life years for all the children who are diagnosed each year
