Oliver Solberg has been stripped of his WRC2 lead at Vodafone Rally de Portugal after being handed a one-minute time penalty in the early hours of Sunday morning. The stewards’ decision said that, by performing ‘doughnuts’ after the flying finish, Solberg was in breach of article 12.21 of the supplementary regulations in conjunction with article 34.1.3 of the 2023 FIA WRC Sporting Regulations. Solberg and co-driver Elliot Edmondson stated that they did not know the regulations in relation to this matter and that they thought they had performed a good show for the spectators. The decision added that while Solberg had performed the ‘doughnuts’ in part of the special stage which was set up for competitive driving, article 12.21 of the supplementary regulations strictly forbids exhibition driving everywhere due to lack of suitable place.
