Newgarden wins the pole at Gateway

Madison, Ill. — Championship leader Josef Newgarden of Team Penske collected his second pole of the season during NTT IndyCar Series qualifying Friday for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta & Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
Newgarden (No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet) had a two-lap average speed of 186.508 miles per hour (48.2554 seconds) on the 1.25-mile oval to claim the NTT P1 Award.
More importantly, Newgarden earned a championship point for his pole-winning effort and extended his lead over second-place Alexander Rossi (No. 27 NAPA Auto Parts Honda), who qualified 11th, to 36 points (536-500).
