Newgarden Earns First Indianapolis 500 Win in Wild Finish

Josef Newgarden passed Marcus Ericsson during a final-lap dash to the checkered flag after a red flag, winning the 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge for his first career “500” victory in the No. It was the 19th Indy 500 victory for Team Penske, extending its event record. This was only the third time in Indianapolis 500 history the race was decided by a last-lap pass, and Newgarden became the first American driver to win the race since Alexander Rossi in 2016. Newgarden passed Ericsson on the backstretch entering Turn 3 and held off Ericsson’s No. The thrilling climax came after three red flags late in the race due to accidents.
