NASCAR Upholds Jones, No. 43 Team’s L-1 Penalty

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has upheld the L-1 level penalty that NASCAR levied to the No. 43 Legacy Motor Club team following a modified greenhouse found during post-race inspection at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis earlier this month. The penalty included the loss of 60 points and five playoff points for both the team and driver, Erik Jones. Jones’ crew chief Dave Elenz was also suspended for two races and was fined $75,000. In reaching the decision, the panel provided the following explanation: “The penalty was consistent with previously assessed penalties for similar situations. The rule book is clear that teams are not allowed to modify single-source parts, and therefore the penalty was upheld.”.
