MICHAEL MASI has been axed as F1’s Race Director following his controversial handling of the Abu Dhabi GP – with the sport now being given its own version of VAR. He also said the new Race Directors will be supported by video referees, likely to be based in Geneva, who will review decisions mid-race. “In real-time connection with the FIA F1 race director, it will help to apply the sporting regulations using the most modern technological tools. The new Race Directors will be in place for next week’s preseason testing in Barcelona. “Michael Masi, who accomplished a very challenging job for three years as F1 race director following Charlie Whiting, will be offered a new position within the FIA. Respect and support of the referees is in the essence of the FIA.
