Porsche has maintained a presence in sports car racing for almost all the company’s 75-year history. No other manufacturer can match Porsche’s 19 victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At Long Beach, both Penske Porsches saved time during the only pit stop of the 100-minute sprint race by not changing tires. Team Penske Porsche 917s won 12 of 17 Can-Am races in 1972 and ’73, delivering championships for George Follmer and Mark Donohue.
