With Jari-Matti Latvala’s Rally Sweden success came an inevitable question for his Finnish countryman. “You never forget the first win as a driver in the world championship, but this is very special. For that message, Mäkinen was a driver as much as a team principal. And, in the last three and a half years, Mäkinen has called on his experiences as a driver to help guide his team to global glory in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships. As Mäkinen moved from driver to team principal himself, it began to dawn on him just how much Cowan had taught him. Not only has Tommi started to learn, he’s started to teach too. Always the driver’s driver, he’s now very much the driver’s team principal.
