Mahoney’s Memories: Larson’s 4-Crown Sweep

Editor’s Note: In this monthly photo essay feature, National Sprint Car Hall of Fame photographer John Mahoney shares his memories and images from some of the most amazing and historic sprint car and midget races. Heading into the 2011 edition of the fall classic, Larson had already scored his first USAC sprint car feature victory and was a four-time winner in the USAC midgets. Starting 11th in the 30-lap sprint car main, Larson was moving to the front while the early leaders were encountering tire problems. Dave Darland took command on the lap 28 restart but another yellow flag put Larson on Darland’s tail. That Saturday night was, as Larson describes it, “when my career kind of exploded.”.
