Lewis Hamilton wins Portuguese Grand Prix to open up seven-point lead in championship standings to second-placed Max Verstappen, with Brit’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas coming third

Lewis Hamilton won the Portuguese Grand Prix, coming from second on the grid to open up his lead at the top of the drivers’ championship to eight points. That is how it finished – Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas – the top three way out on their own. Verstappen came in for new soft tyres in the dying embers of the race and duly scored the fastest lap to keep him as close to Hamilton in the standings as possible. Lewis Hamilton was cool, calm and calculated and cruised to victory at the Algarve International circuit. Max Verstappen finished second and Valtteri Bottas third. Max Verstappen pit stops for soft tyres and he will also go for a fastest lap attempt. Max Verstappen has gained over one second on Lewis Hamilton but still remains four seconds behind the leader. Valtteri Bottas is going to attempt a fastest lap and enters the pits. Lewis Hamilton maintains a five-second advantage over Max Verstappen, who is six seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Lewis Hamilton is five seconds ahead of Verstappen as we enter the final ten laps. Valtteri Bottas is not settling for third as he keeps pushing behind Max Verstappen in the fight for second. Lewis Hamilton takes the lead in the 51st lap as he overtakes Sergio Perez in Turn 1. Valtteri Bottas now puts in the fastest lap and is still on Max Verstappen’s tail, just 2.4 seconds behind the Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton records the fastest lap of the race as Daniel Ricciardo has a slow 4.8 second pit stop and re-enters the race at 10th. Max Verstappen has already closed the gap on Hamilton to 3.1 seconds. Bottas pits and is on hards and comes out ahead of Verstappen… just!. Max Verstappen pits and he is on the hard compound tyre. Max Verstappen is really closing the gap on Valtteri Bottas here. Red Bull could be looking for an undercut with Verstappen on Bottas to then charge the Brit. Max Verstappen is eyeing up Valtteri Bottas but can he overtake before pit stops? Max Verstappen is getting back into his groove and is closing the gap to around 1 second on Hamilton ahead. Verstappen has a moment through Turn 14 and allows Hamilton to capitalise on the back straight. Max Verstappen is looking so quick on the back straight. Verstappen and Hamilton are catching Bottas and are both within one second of the leader.
