Lewis Hamilton warns that McLaren qualifying second and third is a ‘wake up call’ for Mercedes as he and team-mate George Russell prepare to start the British Grand Prix sixth and seventh on the grid

Lewis Hamilton has warned that McLaren qualifying second and third for the British Grand Prix is a ‘wake-up call’ for Mercedes. Norris has had the edge on Mercedes in recent weeks – he finished ahead of both Hamilton and George Russell in Austria last time out – and with McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri producing his best ever qualifying in F1 to take third, alarm bells should be sounding at Mercedes, according to Hamilton. ‘It is not a blow,’ Hamilton said of his old side’s success. ‘I will be optimistic and do my best but realistically I am not sure,’ Hamilton said when asked if he can reward a record turnout this weekend with a podium.
