Lewis Hamilton is a ‘long shot’ to win the world title, insists Toto Wolff after just ONE race – with Mercedes boss on a downer after Bahrain struggle despite Brit salvaging a third-placed finish

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton is a long shot to win the world championship, despite 22 of 23 races to go. The gloomy assessment followed Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix, in which Red Bull’s two late retirements handed Hamilton a flattering third place. Mercedes were at times a second slower than the leaders, and Hamilton would have finished fifth but for Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez suffering suspected fuel pump-related problems. Perhaps Wolff is using his bleak forecast as backs-to-the-wall motivation, having previously noted how well Mercedes respond to troubles. Mercedes boffins have little time to find a cure with the next race taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.
