Lewis Hamilton has a super-strong mind and unrivalled experience, while Max Verstappen looks to have a quicker car and is red hot in qualifying… as the new season starts in Bahrain this weekend, here’s how the great rivals measure up

This weekend sees the highly-anticipated return of Formula One, and with it, the return of one of the biggest rivalries the world of sport has seen in many years. But it is fair to say Hamilton and Verstappen fit into very different selections here… it is very much night and day when it comes to the way they approach each race. According to the data on FormulaOnePoints.com, last season Verstappen secured 10 pole positions compared with Hamilton’s 10, and the Red Bull man was faster in 13 races, compared with Hamilton’s nine. At Red Bull, being No 2 to Verstappen has been something of a poisoned chalice in recent seasons. Overall, though, you would have to say that Hamilton edges this category, if only for the disastrous previous Verstappen has with his Red Bull team-mates. Fair to say that it’s a one-man show at both teams, though… Hamilton: 8/10.
