JONATHAN MCEVOY: There’s tension between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes but it’s total NONSENSE to claim he’ll walk away from F1… the world champion is hungry for more success and suggesting he’d quit was merely megaphone negotiation tactic

An Italian journalist in the press room at Imola wondered if his ears had deceived him. He thought he had heard Lewis Hamilton saying he might quit Formula One. ‘Did Lewis just say what I thought he said?’ he asked me. It is unimaginable that Lewis Hamilton will walk away from F1 aged just 35 despite his claims. Yes, Hamilton is right in a technical sense when he says there is ‘no guarantee’ he will be at Mercedes next season because he has yet to sign a new contract and his current deal runs out in less than eight weeks’ time. Hamilton’s pulverising driving and results suggest the Mercedes racer still remains hungry. Hamilton began the year asking for a new Mercedes contract valued at £50million-per-year.
