JONATHAN MCEVOY: Mercedes must stop being Lewis Hamilton fan-boys and make George Russell their No 1 driver… Toto Wolff should have been ruthless after his dynamite drive in Bahrain three years ago

There are two performances I have witnessed live that marked British drivers out for stardom from the beginning. In that cramped environment, Russell unfurled one of the great performances of modern times. Russell’s drive that day may yet prove to be a fulcrum in Hamilton’s story. His drive in Bahrain may be the moment Hamilton’s status declined. Wolff even kept on Valtteri Bottas as Hamilton’s supine No 2 — one of the most obviously bad decisions in the story of F1 management. He is also one of the most error-prone drivers I have ever seen. Well, didn’t Lewis Hamilton, a great, also start on hard tyres before moving to mediums?. Yes, and Hamilton ‘only’ travelled from 13th to sixth in the final analysis.
