‘I don’t know why he would think he would be better off at Ferrari than Mercedes’: Ex-F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says Lewis Hamilton is more likely to retire than accept a £40m-a-year to race in red

Bernie Ecclestone believes Lewis Hamilton is more likely to retire than accept an offer to drive for Ferrari. Ferrari’s favoured idea is to pair Hamilton with Charles Leclerc, their current No 1, in place of Carlos Sainz. Ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, Ecclestone, who ran the sport for 40 years and remains in close contact with the main players, said: ‘I don’t know why Lewis would think he would be better off at Ferrari than where he is at the moment. They know him, and they have a lot of respect for him so he couldn’t be better looked after anywhere.
