Formula 1: Saudi Arabia rejects criticism as debut race in 2021 confirmed

Saudi Arabia has rejected criticism after it was confirmed it would host its first Formula 1 race in 2021. Sports Minister HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal said staging the race “perfectly reflects the transformational journey the country is on”. Amnesty International has said the event will be used to sports-wash Saudi Arabia’s “appalling” human rights record. “Saudi Arabia was criticised for being closed off to the world, and now we’ve opened up, we’re criticised for sports-washing,” he told BBC Sport. F1 chairman Chase Carey, said “Saudi Arabia is a country that is rapidly becoming a hub for sports and entertainment… and we are very pleased that F1 will be racing there from next season.
