Charles Leclerc believes his surprise pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix for Ferrari is the real deal, and that his team could become a major force this season. However, Leclerc pipped the Dutchman to pole position around the Sakhir circuit, with his team-mate Carlos Sainz in third and only a tenth down to indicate Ferrari are well on the pace at the season opening race. ‘It feels good,’ said Leclerc, 24, bidding to become Ferrari’s first world champion since Kimi Raikkonen triumphed for the Italian team in 2007. Mercedes have struggled for balance in their car, and the seven-time world champion admitted his team are well down on Ferrari and Red Bull’s pace – having been out-qualified by both the teams’ drivers.
