Ferrari have continued their strong start to the 2022 F1 season with Carlos Sainz leading Charles Leclerc home for a one-two finish in first practice for the Australian Grand Prix. Sainz clocked 1:19.806 on his best lap, just over half a second ahead of Leclerc’s 1:20.377, with the Spaniard getting through 24 laps compared to his teammate’s 21. Lewis Hamilton was 1.221 seconds adrift of Sainz as he finished seventh, also using the hard compound to eke out his best lap. He was just ahead of Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who had his best practice of the year so far in the struggling McLaren as he laid down a time of 1:21.55 on the soft tyre. Michael Schumacher’s lap record, set in a Ferrari in 2004, of one minute 24.125 seconds was bettered by 19 of the 20 drivers on Friday.
