Can Quartararo emulate Rossi’s Mugello heroics?

After what he described as “the best lap” of his career, Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) will start from pole for the fourth consecutive time in 2021 at the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley. This is the first pole position for a Yamaha rider at Mugello in the premier class since Valentino Rossi in 2018 (his most recent pole position), and the ninth overall for Yamaha in the class at the track. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was the last rider to have won the MotoGP™ race at Mugello after starting from pole position in 2014. Valentino Rossi (2005 and 2008) is the only Yamaha rider to have done it in the MotoGP™ era. This is also the best qualifying from a KTM rider since Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was on pole position in Portugal last year.
