British Grand Prix sprint race qualifying LIVE: Latest with new format UNDERWAY – Hamilton starts ahead of Verstappen

SILVERSTONE is packed with F1 fans ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton is very audibly gutted after that, the sprint race certainly mattered to him. Max Verstappen, donning his retro wreath, says: “We had a really good start and a good fight with Lewis. Max Verstappen somewhat understated after claiming three points towards his first world title, one more than Lewis Hamilton took today. Fernando Alonso takes seventh after making up four places in the race, a tally nobody could better. Max Verstappen told to stay of all kerbs, perhaps because this is about bringing home the car in one piece with his victory seemingly in the bag. Lewis Hamilton’s task appears impossible with the gap up to 2.8 seconds. Lewis Hamilton wants more muscle, telling team radio: “I’m giving it everything, have you got any more power?”. A fastest lap from Lewis Hamilton as we near the final laps hints at a late dash to the chequered flag. Lewis Hamilton is consistently three tenths slower than Max Verstappen each lap as the pack starts to spread out. Max Verstappen leads Lewis Hamilton rather comfortably. The ‘sprint’ in ‘sprint qualifying’ is well and truly being defined by Max Verstappen. A fastest lap puts him over 1.5 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who has a two-second gap on Valtteri Bottas in third with Charles Leclerc fourth. Max Verstappen’s front-left brake was flaming as he waited for the race to start and he got a great leap on Lewis Hamilton. A couple of pushes back from Lewis Hamilton to no avail, Max Verstappen is almost a second clear already.
